The Cause of The Lord’s Appearance

In Srimad Bhagavat Gita, the Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krishna said:

paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām
dharma-saṁsthāpanārthāya sambhavāmi yuge yuge (4.8)

From this verse spoken by the Lord, we understand that He appears in every Age (Yuga), whenever there is a decline in righteousness in this material world, and a rise in disturbance towards the holy persons (Sadhus) due to the nature of demoniac persons (Asura).  The Lord appears to annihilate the Asuras and to deliver the Sadhus.  By doing so, He reestablishes religious principles back into society and delivers the Asuras from their demonic nature.  We should not for a moment think that the Asuras come from a separate source than the Sadhus. The source of all creation is the Supreme Personality – Sri Krishna.

We know from our ancient Vedic history that the Lord at one point desired to relish His own power (Vira-Rasa).  But how was He to fulfil this desire?  Who could possibly be His competitor?  If one was to even try to be the competitor, it would be as though a goat is fighting a tiger.  Everyone knows that a goat does not have the ability to wage a fight with a tiger; instead the goat will become the tiger’s delightful meal.  The circumstance for fulfilling the Lord’s desire is created the very moment the desire manifests within Him.

The moment the Lord wished to taste His own power, the four Kumaras (Chatur-Kumar) – Sanaka, Sanatan, Sanandan and Sanat Kumar, who are the mind-born sons of Brahma, appeared at the gates of Lord Vishnu’s abode, Vaikunta.  Lord Vishnu resides in Vaikunta in the opulent form of Lord Krishna.  The Chatur Kumar are by nature extremely humble, tolerant and respectful.  Upon approaching the gates and about to enter, the Chatur Kumar were interrupted and refused entrance by the two gate-keepers, Jay and Vijay.  The meaning of the word ‘Vaikunta’ is ‘no obstacle’.  The Chatur Kumar explained to both Jay and Vijay the true meaning of Vaikunta but the two did not agree and continued to hold their ground.  By the plan of the Lord, anger formed in the pure hearts of the Chatur Kumar and so they cursed Jay and Vijay for disobeying and disrespecting the meaning of the word Vaikunta.  Both the gate-keepers were cursed to take birth in demoniac form in the material world.  Soon after the incident, the Chatur Kumar felt great regret.  They were lamenting “We, the Chatur Kumar, for the good of all living entities we are maintaining vow of celibacy, why then did we curse Jay and Vijay, residents of the Lord’s abode into a hellish demoniac life?”

As the Chatur Kumar were lamenting over their action towards Jay and Vijay, Lord Vishnu appeared in their presence.  The Lord explained the reason for their anger, that in order to fulfill His desire to enjoy the taste of His own power, He planned this situation with Jay and Vijay.  The Lord pacified the Chatur Kumar by explaining that their curse towards the gate-keepers is actually rendering service to the Lord which will ultimately fulfill His wish, and therefore they should not to feel aggrieved by their action.

Lord Vishnu then asked Jay and Vijay “what do you want?”  With folded palms, they both pleaded earnestly to the Lord to not send them to the material world as demons to fight with Him.  “How can we fight with You?  Please be merciful and keep us in Your abode eternally, and give us the opportunity to serve you wholeheartedly.”  Since Jay and Vijay had to spend their curse, the Lord gave them two options for their time in the material world.  They could either hold a friendship relationship with the Lord or be His enemy.  If they chose to be in the friendship relationship with Him then they would have to spend seven lives in the material world and if they chose to be His enemy, then they would spend three lifetimes in the material world.  Wanting to return to the Lord’s service in His abode as quickly as possible, Jay and Vijay chose the latter option of keeping enmity with the Lord for three lives.

Thus, for the sake of the Lord’s satisfaction Jay and Vijay in the Golden Age (Satya Yuga) appeared as His enemies in the form of Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu; in the Silver Age (Treta Yuga) as Ravana and Kumbhakarna and in the Copper Age (Dwapara Yuga) as Shishupal and Dantavakra.  In these forms they served the desire of Lord Krishna’s opulent form – Lord Vishnu.  Service to the Lord means to fulfil His desires.  The demonic personifications playing their role in the Lord’s pastimes in this material world are not ordinary individuals.  They only act to fulfil His desires.

One of the four main expansions of Lord Krishna is Vāsudev.  At the time of the marriage ceremony of the parents of Lord Vāsudev, mother Devaki and father Bosudeva, the Lord created a miraculous scene to take place.  Kamsa, who is the brother of Devaki was a great demon by nature, nonetheless, he had much affection for his sister Devaki.  Kamsa, out of his brotherly affection chose to be the chariot rider carrying his newly-wed sister and brother-in-law Bosudeva to the house of Bosudeva.  While riding the chariot, suddenly a celestial voice coming from the sky (Akash-Vani) warned Kamsa “Oh foolish Kamsa, the eighth child of Devaki will be the cause of your death!”

All living entities fear death and Kamsa was no exception.  Upon hearing this omen, Kamsa became fearful and was immediately ready to kill Devaki, who was to be the root cause of his death.  This is evidence of the unreliable nature of a demoniac character.  The loving affection he had for his sister soon turned sour.  Kamsa drew his sword to behead Devaki when Bosudeva intervened and diplomatically began to instruct him.  Bosudeva stressed that it would not be good for Kamsa to kill his own sister who is now also Bosudeva’s new wife.  Bosudeva vowed to offer all of Devaki’s children to the hands of Kamsa as soon as they were born.  With Bosudeva’s plea, Kamsa was satisfied by this proposal and so he allowed Devaki to live but kept both the newlyweds in jail under constant supervision.

With time, Devaki gave birth to her first child.  Keeping to his promise, Bosudeva took their first child to be delivered to Kamsa.  Upon seeing the newborn, Kamsa deliberated that since this is not Devaki’s eighth child, he would not kill the baby and told Bosudeva to return the child back to Devaki.  The Lord will not appear until the scale of Kamsa’s sins has not reached the optimum level.  To accelerate the process of the Supreme Lord descending into this material world, Narada Muni appears and instills Kamsa with fear that any of Devaki’s children might be the eighth child.  Narada Muni warns Kamsa “Do you not know the ways of the gods? If we were to count from reverse, the first child would be the eighth, so better to kill them all without trusting their words.”  Kamsa, now full of fear of his imminent death, snatched the baby off Devaki and killed him by throwing the newborn against a rock.  The same fate was met by all the five other sons Devaki gave birth to.

Srila Jiva Goswamipad, a previous Acharya gives a fitting explanation in his commentary on the passage above. According to his explanation, the six children of Devaki represent the six enemies (ṣaḍa ripu) of the conditioned souls; 1) lust (kāma), 2) anger (krodha), 3) greed (lobha), 4) temptation (moha), 5) pride (mada) and 6) envy (mātsarya). He further comments that the first child was taken by force which signifies that lust is very difficult to control and one must control this enemy with great internal strength. Actual initiation is when one is able to control these six enemies of the mind.  This was the reason for why Sri Balaram entered the womb of Devaki on the seventh time.  Balaram is the source of Guru-Tattva.  He is the prime Guru (sandhinī śakti) through whose mercy we receive the service of Sri Sri Radha Krishna.  He is non-different to Krishna and beyond the reach of personalities like Kamsa.  By entering the womb of Devaki, Balaram served to prepare the womb for the advent of the Lord.  Through the manipulation of Yogamaya’s power, Balaram was transferred from the womb of Devaki to Rohini’s womb – the other wife of Bosudeva.  Kamsa received the news of miscarriage but Balaram, now transferred to the womb of Rohini was fulfilling the desire of the Lord.

By the mercy of Guru, one can obtain the service of the Lord with pure vision (darśan) and touch (sparśan). The entire universe was inundated by the mercy of Guru. All the gods and goddesses were waiting eagerly with awe and reverence for the Lord’s Appearance.  The Supreme Lord enacts His janma-lila (birth-pastime) for the sake of fulfilling the parental love (vātsalya rasa) of His devotees. Both Devaki and Bosudeva, and Yashoda and Nanda Maharaj are the devotees filled with vātsalya rasa.  The Lord showed the entire universe a glimpse of His wonderful pastimes by appearing in the wombs of both Devaki and Yashoda simultaneously.  In the womb of Devaki, the Lord took on the four armed vāsudev-kṛṣṇa form.  The Lord’s primary four expansions are Vāsudev, Saṅkaṣan, Pradyumna and Aniruddha.  So therefore, the vāsudev-kṛṣṇa appearing in Devaki’s womb is known as an incarnation or an avatar of the Supreme Lord, whereas the two armed Krishna who appeared in the womb of Yashoda is the source of all incarnation known as avatārī.

The Lord appeared in front of father Bosudeva and mother Devaki as the four armed form of Narayan, but on the request of mother Devaki, He changed into the two armed form of Vāsudev Krishna.  This Vasudeva Krishna is the opulent form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krishna.  Sri Krishna, the figure of sweetness form (madhurya rasa) Himself appeared in mother Yashoda’s womb – wife of Nanda Maharaj.

Vrindavan Krishna is the epitome of the madhurya rasa.  Srimati Radharani is an expansion of Vrindavan Krishna and appeared from the left side of His transcendental body.  She is the expansion of His pleasure potency and have inspired Gaudiya followers to worship Her to receive the taste of this sweet mellow.  The son of Nanda Maharaj and mother Yashoda is the object of worship for all the devotees in the Gaudiya lineage.  Vrindavan Krishna is eternally in the company of Srimati Radharani and her associates (sakhis) and blessing the devotees who wish to experience this sweetness.

Under the guidance of Yogmaya, Bosudeva was able to leave Kamsa’s jail with the baby Vāsudev Krishna for the palace of Nanda Maharaj.  Bosudeva braved through the heavy night of torrential rain, lightening and thunderstorm and managed to cross the vast waters of the Yamuna River to reach Nanda Maharaj’s palace.  As Bosudeva approached the palace of Nanda Maharaj, Vāsudev Krishna merged with Vrindavan Krishna and became one transcendental form.  In the meantime, through Yogamaya’s potency, Bosudeva noticed that a baby girl was sleeping beside mother Yashoda, who was lying unconscious.  The newborn girl here is the embodiment of Yogmaya Devi.

Yogmaya appearing before the arrival of the Lord is significant as she creates the ideal condition for the Lord to enact His pastimes.  As she appeared, under her influence all those present around mother Yashoda, including mother Yashoda herself, fell into deep sleep after seeing the newborn baby girl.  As everyone lay asleep, Vrindavan Krishna appeared from the womb of mother Yashoda.

As mentioned earlier, Vāsudev Krishna merged into Vrindavan Krishna when brought by Bosudeva from Mathura.  It is this Vāsudev Krishna, form of Lord Vishna who is responsible for slaying all the demons sent by Kamsa.  It may appear that it is Vrindavan Krishna who is killing the demons, but in actual fact, He Himself never killed any demon.

It is stated in Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita (Adilila 4.13): —

ataeva visṇu takhan kṛṣṇera śarīre
viṣṇu-dvāre kṛṣṇa kare asura-saṁhāre

(Meaning: Lord Vishnu is present in the body of Vrindavan Krishna.  Vishnu was killing all the demons in the form of Vrindavan Krishna.)

The Supreme Lord Vrindavan Krishna is manifesting His birth pastimes in this material world once in Brahma’s one day. Brahma’s one day is 14th Manmantar (duration Manu’s life time). One Manmantar is 71 Chatur-Yuga. Here Chatur-Yuga means – 1 Golden Age, 1 Silver Age, 1 Copper Age and 1 Iron Age; all the four Ages together is called one Chatur Yuga. According to the calculations, we can see that Brahma’s one day has 994 Copper Ages. According to the description found in the scriptures (Krishna Samhita by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur), Krishna appears in the Copper Age. Out of the 994th Copper Ages in the entire day of Brahma; on 497thth Copper Age (which is called the Copper Age of 7th Manmantvar on 28th number of Chatur-Yuga) Vrindavan Krishna appears here in this material world once only.  Apart from the 28th number Chatur-Yuga on 7th Manmantvar, all the other 993 times of the Copper Ages in Brahma’s one day, Vāsudev Krishna appears here in this material world. This Vāsudev Krishna is an incarnation of Vrindavan Krishna.

Vrindavan Krishna who is the Supreme Personality, expands into plenary forms and other manifestations for specific purposes.  As stated earlier, the four expansions of Vrindavan Krishna are Vāsudev, Sankarsan, Pradyumna and Aniruddha.  It may appear that Vrindavan Krishna has ventured out of Vrindavan, but in reality, He remains and one of His other forms, such as Vāsudev Krishna will unfold the pastimes.  Vāsudev is the primary expansion and is considered the origin of the material nature.

It is a common misconception amongst the people of the Iron Age (Kali-Yuga) that mother Yashoda fostered the son of Devaki.  This misconception arose from people’s inability to understand the mysterious ways of the Lord’s actions and pastimes.  Our previous teachers have revealed these mysteries and detail about the pastimes of the Lord’s appearance and have given us the opportunity to hear and relish this wonderful nectarean pastime.  In closing this passage, I hope that all the readers have enjoyed reading about the Supreme Lord’s mysterious and beautiful pastimes.
